Definition of Infant Mortality and Recent National Trends

Infant mortality is measured as the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births per year in a given geographical area. Death must have occurred between the first and 364th day of life.

In the USA, infant mortality has been steadily decreasing. This advance is partly due to rapid increases in medical technology, understanding of fetal and neonatal development and the increase in medical facilties with newborn intensive care units (NICU).
