The Community Health Indicators Phase IV Report published by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health reports on the number of 3rd grade children with unmet dental care needs and those with sealants.

A pilot study by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health showed that, among nine schools, 30% of 3rd grade children that received dental screening had obvious dental needs. 18.6% of these screened children had dental sealants.

This pilot project was performed in 2002-2004 on nine schools in Cuyahoga County. The selection of these students was not done in a manner that allowed the results to be generalized to all 3rd grade students in the county.

In other words, you cannot say that these statistics accurately reflect what is happening throughout the entire county. However, these data illustrate the need for greater access to dental care among grade school students in Cuyahoga County.
