Cleveland 7th and 8th grade students: more time unmonitored leads to more alcohol, cigar use

In 2008, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was used to survey 7th and 8th grade students in Cleveland schools. Both good and bad behaviors were measured. The survey was supported by offices of the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County and coordinated by the Center for Adolescent Health of Case Western Reserve University

The 2008 Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) report examined the trends of risky behavior (tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use) among middle school students (7th & 8th graders) and time left alone after school. This report reflects attitudes and behaviors among students in grades 7 and 8 in Cleveland middle schools.

The Center for Adolescent Health (CAH), Department of family Medicine of Case Western Reserve University produced and coordinated the survey and report. The effor was supported by City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County resources including Steps to a Healthier Cleveland of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, Cuyahoga County Child and Family Services and Comprehensive Partnership for Tobacco Reduction. The report is similar to the 2008 Cuyahoga County Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Report.

Some of the locally important issue surveyed are:
Behaviors that Contribute to Unintentional Injuries
Dietary Behaviors
Physical Activity
Obesity & Overweight/Weight Control
Tobacco Use (including cigarettes and little cigars)
Alcohol Use
Marijuana and Other Drug Use
Behaviors that Contribute to Violence Sexual Behaviors
Other Health Topics

Time unmonitored, alcohol and cigar use

The sampled data are representative of the middle school population of 7th and 8th graders in the city that attend Cleveland schools. Pages 24-25 of the report describes their findings on self-care, those students left alone for any period of time after school. CAH reports that a greater proportion of 7th and 8th grade students that use smoke cigars or alcohol tend to be left alone for more hours (self-care). This behavior is similar to that found in the Cuyahoga County YRBS report for the same year.
