CDC reports over a million chlamydia infections in 2006
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states actual infections may be even higher, as many as 2.8 million in the US.
The CDC ranks Chlamydia as the most common US reportable disease, and says many people are likely to be infected but unaware of it. Even once treated, people may be reinfected by contact with untreated partners, so partner screening and treatment is needed. Although untreated chlamydial infections can go unnoticed (but still contagious) for periods of time, they also can lead to infertility and
serious illness, including pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic
pregnancy in females.
