Search Help

How to make the most of the Search Box.

The search box is located on every page on the site.  It will locate your search words within titles, descriptions and document text.

You can use AND, OR, the single wildcard ? and the multi-wildcard * to enhance your search.  When you type more than one word, AND is used by default.  Note that wildcards cannot be used as the first letter of a search term.

Examples:

Search Terms Results

bird flu, bird AND flu

Items that contain both 'bird' and 'flu'.
The result is the same with or without the AND.

bird OR flu

All items that contain 'bird', plus all items that contain 'flu', plus all items that contain both terms.
The 'OR' is necessary to get this result.

bir?

Items containing 'bird'

bir*

Items containing 'bird', 'birds', 'birth', etc.

bi?d

Items containing 'bird' but not 'bid'.
The '?' represents exactly one letter.

bi*d

Items containing 'bid', 'bird', 'birthed'.
The '*' can represent multiple or no letters.

?ird, *ird

None.
Wildcards can't be the first letter of a search term

At this time, text within files is not searched.  This means that with .PDF, .xls, or Microsoft Word files, only the titles and descriptions are searched.

Advanced Search

Lets you limit your search to just the title or description, search by keywords, or by author.  For general use, the simple search gives better results.
