Poverty increases in suburban and rural areas in Northeast Ohio

Posted by db last modified January 23, 2012

Analysis by the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development (CUPCD) at CWRU reveal increasing levels of poverty outside of Cleveland

Researchers at Case Western Reserve Univerisity report that the number of people in poverty is increasing in Cuyahoga County municipalities adjacent to Cleveland and beyond. Poverty levels, the proportion of the public in poverty, is quickly increasing in Summit and Mahoning counties, especially in suburban and rural areas.

The report provides poverty statistics for Cleveland neighborhoods as well. Using data from the 2010 US Census, researchers at the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development (CUPCD) determined that some neighborhoods in Cleveland have seen a decrease in the numbers of persons in poverty. this is due to middle income earners (and greater) moving into urban areas.

A press release and a copy of the report is available at this link.
